Patent rights in research – protecting knowledge, strengthening innovation

Last week, our research assistants had the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of intellectual property law.

As part of a training course, Dr Thomas Sperling, patent attorney at the law firm Sperling, Fischer & Heyner – Patentanwälte Dresden · Magdeburg, guided us through the basics and practical implementation of patent rights in research institutes – from the idea to the invention to the patent application.

In addition to strategic and legal aspects, there was a special focus on practical application and successful collaboration between inventors and patent attorneys.

A special moment during the event was the presentation of the patent certificate to our colleague Marco Mäbert. The patent relates to a ‘process for producing fibre material from shredded wood and an arrangement for implementing the process for production from shredded wood’.

The inventors also include Martin Hielscher and Prof. Dr. Detlef Krug.

The process protected by the patent is a central component of the European joint project EcoReFibre, which deals with innovative and sustainable solutions for the material use of waste wood. More information about the project: https://ecorefibre.eu/

We would like to congratulate Dr Sperling on this success and thank him for his expert, practical training. It impressively demonstrates how important professional patent protection is for the sustainable transfer of research results into application.
